As the transmission medium for the future, the optical fibre industry is a fast grower. The backbone of the Information Superhighway, is the main consumer of GeCl4 today.

GeCl4 is used as a doping agent in the core of a silica glass optical fibre to increase its refraction index, allowing optical data transmission through the fibre. To support optimal transmission a high purity GeCl4 is critical.

Umicore offers high purity GeCl4 responding to industry’s increasing demands. Low concentrations of hydrogen bonds and metallic impurities are our standard.

Packing and Logistics
GeCl4 is a corrosive material requiring specialised packing. Besides glassware bottles for small volumes, Umicore offers stainless steel containers up to 400 kg with specially designed 3-valve system, preventing any contamination during transport or usage. Flexible and effective logistics guarantee a smooth supply.  Recycling of germanium is a key to the optical fibre business, due to the low incorporation yield into the fibre. Recovering germanium from production wastes besides direct cost savings, offers advantages such as improved security of supply and reduced sensitivity to the germanium price variation.

Umicore’s recycling capabilities allow efficient recycling of various Ge containing residues at very competitive conditions. Our expertise enables us to give our customers optimal support in optimising their recovery yields.
