Vision
The market for night vision continues its shift to commercial applications,
addressing recent social trends to improve personal security. A breakthrough
in mass consumer applications for thermal imaging is the development
of night vision systems for cars.
Low Cost Optics
Cost requirements for mass production have driven the search for low-cost
infrared optical systems. Infrared transmitting chalcogenide glasses
are a likely candidate for these applications in the short term. Price
curves compatible with large volume requirements are achievable due
to the lower cost input materials and the ability to combine final spherical,
aspherical and diffractive lens geometry with good surface quality in
a single moulding operation – thus avoiding the elaborate and costly
shaping and polishing.
