ZnSe and ZnS (Clear) are the only environmentally stable materials
with high transmission in all three important wavebands: visible, mid
infrared and far infrared. The optical properties make zinc selenide
and zinc sulfide preferred materials for thermal imaging (night vision
or heat seeking applications) and CO2 - laser optics. Both
materials are also available in evaporative grades.
Zinc selenide is produced with the CVD technique at Umicore Infrared, formerly known as Phase4 Infrared. Zinc selenide and zinc sulfide (clear) are market and fabricated to customer specifications. The physical properties of these materials make them easily machineable.
